What is Soy wax?
Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed.
What are the benefits of using Soy wax?
You might think it’s ‘trendy’, yep we agree. But there is a reason why things trend and in this instance it’s because of the environmental benefits. Soy is renewable and carbon neutral. Crops are harvested and replanted annually. Soy wax burns slow, clean and evenly. Once you have tried a soy candle you’ll always look for it.
Average burn time of KimmyB® candles?
We have found that approximately 5 grams of soy wax burns every hour. On each product we have put a specification to help guide your expectation, but due to the handmade nature of our products the volume of wax contained may vary slightly.
10 cl soy wax has a burn time of approx. 20 hours
30 cl soy wax has a burn time of approx. 45 hours. These durations vary slightly, depending on the material of the container and the care taken.
Why do you recommend burning for 3 - 4 hours at a time?
This is a guide because we want you to enjoy the candle for as long as possible. At 3 to 4 hours the surface of the candle (and beyond depending on size etc.) will be liquified meaning you can stop burning and allow the aroma to travel on. Once the wax solidifies again you can start over.
Why do you recommend I burn the candle until the surface layer has melted?
This is especially recommended on your first use. Some call this a candles 'memory'. Metaphorically speaking it's like digging a whole for a plant, you need to make the whole wide enough not just dig in the same small place ... make sense?!
What if I spill the melted soy wax?
Soy wax is softer than any other wax we know, meaning if you get it on a surface a damp cloth usually does the trick whilst it’s still wet. If left to harden you’ll want to use a sponge with a light abrasive surface such as a scourer, we recommend E-Cloth® Washing-Up Cleaning Scourer Pad, available in Lakeland. Soy wax also washes out of clothes. Obviously the approach is dependent on the surface and material – please contact us if you have any concerns.
Do you take bespoke candle orders?
We have a growing range of scents and are keen to hear if you can’t find what you’re looking for, please drop us a line! Also, if you have a precious fire resistant candle container you’ve been holding onto (currently being used to store pencils, cue-tips etc!)...we can re-fill it with a scented soy wax of your choice. We charge a minimum of £5 for up to 100g of soy wax, then it's 5p per gram after that (e.g 150g is £7.50) The scent and wick is included (up to 3 wicks only). Postage is not included and will be quoted dependent on the size and weight of your container. Contact us for further details. Also if you would like to bring your container to us at an event (saving on your postage) we would be happy to refill at the above rates and will usually be able to return the finished product within 10 days. Can you make candles as wedding favours?
Absolutely, the small candles make a gorgeous and thoughtful gift for your wedding guests. You can choose the type of container and the scent making the candle as unique as you are!
